CicloTour is Romania’s only printed magazine dedicated to cyclotourism.
Every month in CicloTour you will find interviews with important names from the world of cycling, as well as heart-warming stories about people passionate about bikes.
This new magazine is aimed at all kind of cyclist, both professional and amateur. A large section of the publication is given over to cycle routes – most of which in Romania – that are described by passionate cyclists. As a result you’ll still find CicloTour useful, months after buying it, when looking for a way to spend your free time in the saddle.
The first issue contains the following:
- Transfăgărășan vs. Transalpina
- Information about cycling competitions in Romania, including Maratonul Vinului
- Routes: Corbii de Piatră, Istrița and Ciolanu, Culmea Tătaru, Viscri
- Bike-friendly accommodation tips

Like like last year, the profits obtained from this year’s Maratonul Vinului will be donated to local charity organisations in the Urlați area: Bucuria Ajutorului and Casa Rozei (more information).
If you want to get involved directly with our charity campaign you can do so by donating clothes for adults and children, as well as toys, pens and pencils and story or colouring books – things you maybe don’t need anymore but which will be much appreciated by the children at Bucuria Ajutorului and the adult residents of Casa Rozei.
Please bring any items for donation with you when you collect your race kit in Bucharest or on the day of the race in Urlați.
The organisers of Maratonul Vinului – a mountain bike event that took place for the second year running in July 2012 in the city of Urlaţi, near Ploieşti, attracting over 400 participants – made a prior commitment to donate any profits from the event to a local charity.
Maratonul Vinului, together with its partner P&G Urlați, is therefore proud to announce that Casa Rozei, an Urlați-based non-governmental organisation that cares for people with physical and mental disabilities, has been selected as the beneficiary of the Maratonul Vinului charity donation. Casa Rozei will receive a donation of 2,500 euros.
Casa Rozei is an initiative that was set up in the early 1990s. Its aim is to create an environment in which residents have the chance to lead normal daily lives, depending on the disability of each individual. All its residents, mostly adults, live in 3 different houses within the Urlați area. Casa Rozei’s basic running costs are funded by the local authorities, but the organisation requires additional funding to be able to fulfil its mission towards the centre in Urlați.
Maratonul Vinului would like to thank all its partners and participants, who together made this donation possible. We are honoured to have been able to contribute to a charity in the Urlati area, and look forward to doing the same next year at Maratonul Vinului 2013.
Last Saturday we set sail for Urlați to make a first check of the trail for Maratonul Vinului 2012 (15th July). When we reached the town centre we happened upon Mircea Crisbășanu of Cycling Romania, a participant in the first Maratonul Vinului in 2011 and a passionate cyclotourist. He was there to do a tour of the region with a group of cyclists.
On our trail we crossed paths with countless cheep, shepherds and a man planting grape vines in a monastery, as you can see from the pictures below…
We’ve changed the date for Maratonul Vinului 2012 to Sunday, 15th July to avoid the local elections being held on the original date of 10th June. We chose the new date so as to minimise any clash with other mountain biking events. Another advantage of the new date is that the beautiful natural surroundings where the event takes place should be even greener!
As in 2011, Maratonul Vinului 2012 will start and finish in the town of Urlaţi, some 20 km east of Ploieşti, with cyclists following a course that takes through some of the most picturesque vineyards in the surrounding area.
The event aims to promote cycling to a wider public and will include an open, non-competitive “family” course (10 km) and 2 competitive races (30 km and 55 km). 600 participants are expected on the day.
All profits from the event will be donated to charity.

A couple of months ago we told you about Casa Rozei – the NGO that cares for people with physical and mental disabilities in the Urlați area – and that Maratonul Vinului would be donating 2,500 euros to help improve its facilities (see update from 28/09/11).
Well, we thought we’d let you know that the people at Casa Rozei have spent the money well, buying bunk beds for their residents in Urlați. Here’s the message we got:
Voila, the bunk beds were ordered, delivered and assembled. We choose white metal beds from Ikea. The rooms look much tidier. And as they sleep 3 in a room, having the new beds means there’s now also space for some cupboards. Thanks!
And here some pictures of the new beds in situ:
Once again, thanks to our sponsors and participants.
Happy Christmas to you all from the Maratonul Vinului team.
See you in the new year!

With the donation from Maratonul Vinului, P&G Urlați and Vodafone, Casa Rozei will acquire 11 bunk beds for its housing units and install new flooring in a recently renovated building where 14 of its younger residents will receive a vocational education.
Maratonul Vinului would like to thank all its partners and participants, who together made this donation possible. We are honoured to have been able to contribute to a charity in the Urlați area, and look forward to following a similar path next year on the occasion of Maratonul Vinului 2012.
Race entry for Maratonul Vinului will close tomorrow evening (31st May) at 10 pm – or earlier if we reach 400 confirmed participants.
After that, it will no longer be possible to sign up for the race.
Please note it will not be possible to sign up or pay on the day of the race in Ulați.
In order to have a confirmed place you must have signed up online and have paid the race entry fee by bank transfer.
Only confirmed participants will be allowed to pick up their race bag at Muzeul Ţaranului Român on 1st and 2nd June or on Saturday morning in Urlați.
If you have paid the race entry fee but do not appear on the list of confirmed participants, please bring proof of payment with you when you collect your race bag.
If you’re competing in Maratonul Vinului and would like to spend another day away from the hustle and bustle of the city, why not join Mircea from Cycling Romania for a day of leisurely cyclotourism in the Urlaţi area.
After the race you can enjoy some wine tasting at an old wine cellar and visit a traditional boyar house, followed by dinner and accomodation at hotel located among the vineyeards. On Sunday you can enjoy a relaxing day in the saddle while visiting centuries-old monasteries hidden among the vines and forests of the Dealu Mare region.
For more information contact Mircea on 0746110033 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
Due to the overwhelming amount of interest in Maratonul Vinului we’ve decided to make an extra 100 hundred places available.
